Nilsletter #4 | Animation Freebies, Realtime Ghostbusters & NeRF Updates

Unlocking Free Character & Clothing goodies, Ghostbusters Virtual Production & Real-Time NeRF Rendering | Issue #04 | August 23, 2023

Issue #04 | Date: August 23, 2023

Hello 3D enthusiast,

Welcome to the fourth round of the 3D Nilsletter! Like before, I've rounded up the coolest happenings from the 3D universe in the last 7 days. Whether it's useful insights or a nudge for your own projects, I hope you find something exciting here.

Ready Player Me, known for its widely used character creator platform that seamlessly integrates with various 3D 'metaverse' platforms, has just launched a collection of over 200 character animations for free. These animations are built to work with the Ready Player Me character rig, and it's important to be aware that they are only licensed for use with the Ready Player Me character. Find the whole collection here.

If you're a Blender user with an interest in clothing or fashion, you're in for a treat. Daniel Bystedt has just introduced a fantastic and incredibly user-friendly clothing addon for Blender. This addon not only offers a much more appealing aesthetic compared to the standard Blender approach but also significantly streamlines the process when compared to using Marvelous Designer for clothing simulations. The best part? This addon is available completely free of charge!

NeRF technology has been making significant waves lately, with its influence becoming increasingly pervasive. The process of capturing NeRFs is becoming more streamlined and accessible, and there's a growing array of tools emerging for visualizing and integrating NeRFs into various 3D applications. One such tool is Lumalab's Plugin for Unreal Engine, enabling the practical utilization of NeRFs. However, the highlight of this week has been the unveiling of 3D Gaussian Splatting - a real-time NeRF renderer that impeccably preserves intricate details. This video showcases the remarkable demonstration of its capabilities.

Tenet of the Spark has released a captivating short video that showcases their innovative approach to navigating through their game. Seamlessly transitioning between entirely distinct styles, all in real-time, with the power of Unreal Engine. For a deeper dive into the game and a visually stunning 3D animation, I recommend visiting their website to learn more.

This animation was produced entirely within Unreal Engine and premiered at the Sony Creators Conference. The animation is a brief, humorous, high-quality 3D creation completed in a remarkably short timeframe, thanks to the utilization of modern virtual production tools such as Unreal Engine. The collaboration involved a team comprising members from Epic, Pixomondo, Sony, and director Jason Reitman (known for Ghostbusters). They successfully crafted this animation using Unreal Engine 5, specifically within the renowned Matrix city sample project. Witnessing the incredible potential of real-time technology in the hands of exceptionally creative and intelligent individuals is truly astounding. You can view the short here (starting at timestamp 7:26), as well as delve into the complete talk and discussion about the technological aspects and the creative process that went into making this animation.

I hope you enjoyed this week's news roundup, and I'm looking forward to sharing more exciting developments in the 3D space in the upcoming editions of this 3D Nilsletter.

That’s all for now!

Regards,
Nils Bakker
